Oh la la ! Montmartre has been a place of controversy for a long time. Cheap cabarets and bistrots were born here; the Moulin Rouge, the Moulin de la Galette, the Lapin Agile were where you would go to drink, sing or see the famous French Cancan ! Bohemian artists such as Renoir or Picasso were drawn here by the cheap rents and creative atmosphere, as well as the excellent light. At the highest geographical point of Paris, Montmartre offers breathtaking views across the whole of the city.

Our licensed guide will lead you through the narrow streets.  Once a village separated from Paris, Montmartre still retains that atmosphere today. Pass by one of the very few remaining places in the city where vines are grown, a tiny and beautiful vineyard hidden on the hillside. The hill of Montmartre was once covered by vines: today the wine is still produced here (in the local town hall!) and every October the harvest takes place and a great celebration is held.

Your guide will take you to the Bâteau Lavoir where poor artists once lived. Among them a certain Pablo Picasso developed his style here, and the Bateau Lavoir is often called the 'birthplace of cubism'. See the famous Maison Rose, immortalised in paintings by Picasso and Utrillo, another Montmartre resident. Stroll through the Place du Tertre, or artist's square, where modern day artists still gather each day to paint and sell their works. See the spectacular Sacré Coeur, the famous white Basilica that sits on the top of the hill, and hear the story of why it was built.

Today Montmartre remains a lively and typical quarter of Paris, proud of its history and inhabited by Parisians who remain passionate about their unique neighborhood. Explore the vibrant streets where locals shop for fresh produce in the many specialist boutiques, or sip aperitifs on one of the many bistrot terraces. Join us for an exploration Montmartre past and present, and discover a very special part of Paris.

This tour involves a fair amount of walking. Montmartre is on a hill and many of the streets are cobblestones.
